Hope you all had a nice weekend and perhaps, like me, attended a ‘Karneval/Fastnacht’ event.
This is not something I normally go for but was surprised at how much I enjoyed a ‘Stunksitzung’ in Cologne in December where it was good to see so many people laughing and enjoying themselves, something I feel we are lacking a little at the moment.
So I was happy to accept an invitation from Manfred, my first German friend and colleague (and real Fastnacht fan) to a great concert in Mainz ‘Symphonie Fastnachtique’. He helped me get dressed up a bit and the show was excellent.
Many Brits are fascinated by these celebrations and flock to Cologne to line the streets and watch the processions.
As a child, I always looked forward to this time of year due to Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday, which is the day before Ash Wednesday where the Brits eat as many pancakes as they can before fasting theoretically starts 😊. You can read all about the history in this link:
As a child, I never really understood why we only ate these delicious pancakes once a year but can remember secretly making pancakes with my sister when my Mum was at work 😊. My kids very soon learned how to make them and they were regularly on the menu when they were small. Now we eat them for lunch on birthdays, with Marc and John still fighting over the last one!
