I\u2019ve tried really hard to persuade some German friends that mint sauce is delicious, but they mostly raised their eyebrows like I\u2019d suggested eating dessert before the main course. Still, it\u2019s very traditional in England. For me, though, apart from not having to cook myself, the best part is the gravy (<em>Bratenso\u00dfe<\/em>) \u2014my mum made the best gravy ever, and yes, I might just sneak an extra spoonful or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And I always find it interesting how English table talk is a bit different to German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>English people are masters of politeness, often phrasing things as if it\u2019s really no big deal whether you say yes or no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So instead of just asking for something, you\u2019ll get: \u201cWould you mind passing the potatoes?\u201d or the classic \u201cI don\u2019t suppose there\u2019s any more gravy, is there?\u201d (Translation: yes, I really, really want more gravy, please.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of the meal, nobody says \u201cGuten Appetit.\u201d It\u2019s more like \u201cEnjoy!\u201d or \u201cEnjoy your meal\u201d\u2014or nothing at all. You just dive in, which somehow feels less formal and more dangerous for the gravy fans among us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if conversation gets awkward\u2014which it inevitably does in families\u2014you\u2019ve got a few trusty tricks up your sleeve. Talk about the weather. Ask about holidays. Or, my personal favourite, lavish praise on the gravy.
