How are you surviving the heat? It\u2019s definitely not my cup of tea! I\u2019m relieved to be in the UK, where it\u2019s a few degrees cooler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While sipping a welcome cup of English tea at Heathrow Airport (best thing in hot weather!), I noticed a sign on the friendly chap cleaning the Arrivals Hall: \u201cHygiene Operative.\u201d It made me smile\u2014so much more important-sounding, which of course it is. They do an essential job!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it made me wonder: do they earn more with the new title, or have we just polished the job name while leaving the pay stuck in the past?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These days, job titles are getting glossier by the minute\u2014a kind of rebranding. Here are just a few I\u2019ve seen or heard recently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1.           Hygiene Operative \u2013 cleaner<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.           Waste Management Technician \u2013 bin man<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.           Customer Experience Specialist \u2013 shop assistant<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4.           Vision Clearance Engineer \u2013 window cleaner<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.           Knowledge Facilitator \u2013 teacher<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6.           Media Distribution Officer \u2013 paperboy<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7.           Interior Environmental Technician \u2013 caretaker<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8.           Sandwich Artist \u2013 the hero of your lunchtime Subway<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yes\u2014Knowledge Facilitator. That\u2019s apparently me when I teach. It does sound better, I admit. I\u2019ve never seen myself as the traditional teacher, chalk in hand, writing on a blackboard!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To be fair, I\u2019m not against any of it. If a better title makes these important workers feel more respected, why not? But let\u2019s hope their pay gets an upgrade too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, as my coach arrives, I raise my teacup to all the Hygiene Operatives out there. Whatever your title, you\u2019re the real VIPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
