But why? There are a few simple reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The weather affects everyone \u2013 whatever you do, it is mostly affected by the weather. Even if you stay at home, it is probably because the weather is bad!<\/li><li>It\u2019s good for small talk as it is not personal and something that everyone can agree on<\/li><li>It\u2019s a great opener for conversations such as:<br>\u201c<em>The weather was nice at the weekend wasn\u2019t it<\/em>?\u201d<br>\u201c<em>Yes, it was, I spent the weekend in the garden. Do you like gardening<\/em>?\u201d<br>\u201c<em>Yes I do<\/em> \u2026.\u201d<br>And so the conversation continues \u2026 note the use of AAA (Answer, Add information and Ask back) for perfect small talk<\/li><li>It is totally unpredictable (some say just like the British) as it affected by six different air masses.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When I call my 95-year old Dad, I know the conversation will be very monosyllabic until we have spoken about the weather, strange isn\u2019t it? I\u2019ve recently started following \u201cVeryBritishProblems\u201d on Instagram (so very British and to be fully recommended) and a large number of the posts are to do with the weather \u2026 This weekend, of course, has been full of the heatwave \u201c<em>It\u2019s a bit more hellish burning red than I like it, I\u2019ll be honest<\/em>\u201d, or the typically British understatement \u201c<em>Bit hot<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British like talking about the weather so much they manage to mention it when they\u2019re not talking about it with expressions such as \u201c<em>A storm in a tea cup<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>You have your head in the clouds<\/em>\u201d and if they\u2019re not feeling well \u201c<em>I\u2019m feeling under the weather<\/em>\u201d which, when I came to Germany, I soon found out is the equivalent of \u201c<em>Kreislaufprobleme<\/em>\u201d. I suppose you get the latter when there is a change in the weather but if you told a Brit you had circulation problems, they would think you had cold hands and feet \u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And by the way<em>,\u201d it\u2019s raining cats and dogs\u201d<\/em> apparently comes from the days that animals slept on thatched rooves (Reetd\u00e4cher) and slipped off when it rained.
